If you’re thinking about starting your own blog, but you’re not quite sure how to start, you need to decide why you want to blog and what you want to blog about. Simply sitting down at your computer, creating a blog, and starting your postings will not meet with the success you desire. It takes some planning to really get started as a beginning blogger.
First of all, make sure you understand what you want to accomplish. There are many reasons for blogging. Think about some of these ideas and then decide why you want to blog:
- Do you want to position yourself as an expert in your professional field of work so you can expand your potential client base?
- Is your blog an effort to stay in touch with family and keep them updated on what’s happening with your family and the life of your family and friends?
- Do you want to promote a particular business?
- Is there a political motivation for your blog and do you want to promote a particular political view?
- Do you want to help others by offering advice, information, and education on a particular subject or area of life such as caregiving, childcare, or other?
- Do you want to promote the value and importance of non-profit organizations and how they can help improve the world?
Once you establish your goals and objectives for your blog, you will find that you have a much greater chance of success. Beginning with a plan in mind is critical to blogging success. This helps you determine how to focus your writing and where to find your target audience. For example, if your topic is related to eldercare, your target audience will likely be baby boomers and older adults. If you want to promote the significance of practicing safe sex, your audience is likely to be teenagers and young adults. Knowing your goals helps you define your audience.
As a beginner blogger, make sure you know what you want to accomplish and then you can create your plan to accomplish your goals. The more and more people read and comment on your blog, the clearer it will be to you what is needed and how you can provide information and education for your audience.
And one very important part of blogging that is essential – ALWAYS be consistent with your blogging efforts. Stay true to your blog topic and be confident in your messaging. Don’t change your position from day to day or you will quickly lose your audience’s interest and confidence.
The best way to succeed at blogging is to just get started and continually evaluate new innovations in marketing and promoting your blog. Once you begin, you’ll find it is addictive and rewarding.
